I play a bit with that approach before but it give less good result on various aspect (both in compression and in usability): - it is harder to tune, - it is less explicit on the memory Mercurial might actually spike to, - as the limit apply to all revlog it can get out of control for larger file (not manifest) (eg x100 can be appropriate for the manifest, but not for a 10MB file) Overall, having a simple way to specify sage boundary for mercurial memory usage is simpler to deal with for a simple mitigation. Overall, we need to rework the reading and heuristic to solve this properly so that factor is unlikely to survive on the long run. > >> compresseddeltalen > textlen * 2 or >> (self._maxchainlen and If I'm not mistaken, we read the whole range of data between the delta base and the last delta in one single read. These data then stay in memory while the full text is recomputed from the delta. So this control the amount of data we might read from disk (in on go) and store in memory while restoring the data. I'm more concerned about the memory usage than the disk reading, if anything heavy is hapening on the repo the manifest.d file will be in cache anyway. > >> >> >>> >>>> compresseddeltalen > textlen * The feature is appropriate for default, even with the noted pitfalls. I’ve grafted the commit to default, pushed a backout to stable, and merged with i18n. I’ll probably roll the release sometime this afternoon.

I’ll probably roll the release sometime this afternoon. Since this process was a bit opaque to me, perhaps we could do a few things to clear it up for me (and hopefully others!) in the future: - I think others need to actually weigh in for more of a consensus (I believe Martin and I agreed it was fine for stable) - Now, that I think about it the only list of things appropriate for stable are here: https://www.mercurial-scm.org/wiki/TimeBasedReleasePlan?action=fullsearch&context=180&value=stable&titlesearch=Titles#Rules_for_code_freeze_and_stable_branch_commits Can we get some clarification on things like this? I know I'd appreciate it :-)

Given that Greg and I both were uncomfortable, and I wanted to perform the release (which I'm about to start[0]), I didn't wait very long before getting things moved along. > - Now, that I think about it the only list of things appropriate for > stable are here: > > https://www.mercurial-scm.org/wiki/TimeBasedReleasePlan?action=fullsearch&context=180&value=stable&titlesearch=Titles#Rules_for_code_freeze_and_stable_branch_commits > > Can we get some clarification on things like this? I know I'd appreciate > it :-) I'd love to chat about it and try to clarify. This one felt like it was a bug fix that required significant new work (it's got a config knob!), and usually we bias towards putting those in a major release unless there's widespread impact for the bug[1]. Let me know if this helps - I agree we should try and clarify the handling of stable some. The situation is only going to get murkier once we tackle having an LTS release (which I'd still like to do.) Thanks, Augie 0: I meant to do it Monday or Tuesday, but life got in the way and it slipped to the start of a work day. :/ 1: My understanding is that the bug in question results in prohibitive storage use if it happens, which is happening for one user that we know of. Given that we're two weeks from an rc release anyway, I'm not willing to risk 4.2.2 (which will, barring any LTS plans, be the last release to ever support 2.6) with this extra bit of churn.

This also affects performance of bundling/unbundling (push/push) by a factor of 10x to 100x too. This affect all users with many branches, there are 3 larges known repositories with that problematic impacts (and others smaller one that show the issues). > Given that we're two weeks from an rc release anyway, I'm not willing to risk 4.2.2 (which will, barring any LTS plans, be the last release to ever support 2.6) with this extra bit of churn. The fact 4.2.2 is the last release supporting 2.6 seems like an argument in favor of taking this mitigation. The issue is affecting a significant part of our user base with crippling impact. It seems important to have this simple mitigation directly available for users still on older python. Asking them to upgrade their python first before reclaiming proper performance seems an higher bare than what we could offer. (I'm talking about affected members of the community we do not know about yet. Unity and Jane Street will be fine, I'm working with them to deploy the mitigation on their currently setup.) Cheers,

I know I'd appreciate >> it :-) > > Sorry for not weighing in on-list initially, but I agreed w/Augie's assessment. It's not explicitly covered by the guidelines you posted, but weighing the number of users impacted, the proximity to a new major release, and the fact that it adds a new flag, it belongs on default. That being said, we could certainly try to formalize the rules a bit better now that there's more than one person who makes the final call :) (replying to both you and Augie) Sure, makes sense. Perhaps at the next sprint we can hash out a list or something.
